As I do at the start of every school year, I will first say "I can't believe how fast time flies!". Ava will be starting 1st grade at St. Margaret Mary Alacoque (SMMA). She has Mrs. Diel for her homeroom teacher and will be in Mrs. Diels' room for most of the day. She moves around for art, music, computer class and P.E., as she did last year, but this year she will move rooms for one subject, science, which will be with Mrs. Marstall. She can't wait to see what 1st grade has in store!
Luckily, Ava's closest friend from last year, Katie, is in her class again. While she is excited for 1st grade, she is also a bit nervous so I know having Katie next to her side helps set her at ease and vice versa. We are now in our second week and everyday I ask "who did you play with", "who did you eat lunch with?", "who did you talk to today?" and the answer is always the same.... Katie, Katie, Katie.
Ava is having a hard time understanding the purpose of grades and even school for that matter. This is the first year where grades are really going to matter and after going through her paperwork from each day, it is evident she has the mentality...just get it done fast, being right doesn't matter. We had a long talk two days ago and while today's paperwork is MUCH better, it is hard to explain a grading system to a 1st grader. I always go back to "if you don't get it right they won't let you go to second grade with your friends next year!". It may be harsh but she seems to get it?! It's also only the second week...we have to get back in the swing of things...including getting up early...always a struggle at this house!
Right now Ava wants to be an entomologist when she grows up, I didn't know what it was either. I googled it...It is someone who studies insects! I can't say that I'm surprised, she loves ANY bug she comes across! She says she may also be a veterinarian...but definitely something that has to do with animals and insects. I on the other hand would rid the world of all insects if I could...I guess it's a good thing there are people like Ava out there! Her favorite color is, no surprise, PINK! She loves to buy her lunch (once a week...because I'm "not fair"). I think it makes her feel older and independent. And like Mom and Dad her favorite subject is P.E.!!
My favorite part of school so far is drop off in the morning. During morning drop off the school has a drive-thru approach. Every car lines up, about 6 cars at a time pull up to the front of the school opens their doors, kids jump out, then pull forward as the next group of cars move in. This is very effective and quick...it's like a machine, there are people coming and going and the teachers and principal are outside to get the kids into the school safely. Right now, as we pull to the front of the school Ava gets out of her seat comes up to my seat to give me a big hug and kiss, then we yell "I love you" and "bye" back and forth till the door closes. I know everyone around can hear due to the looks we get, but I love it because I know it's only a matter of time and she will start requesting that I drop her off behind the school or get my windows tinted. :)
In other Ava news soccer has been going better and at last weekends game she even had a break away! She dribbled towards the goal, no one in sight, the goalie started coming out of the goal, Ava got to the top of the penalty box and kicked it with all her might! The ball was movin pretty good, slowed down a bit and then slowly rolled into the goalies open arms. Next lesson...it is OK to get close to the goal before trying to kick it in. She did have the ball by herself for about 2 minutes so we are moving in the right direction! Stay tuned...Next week we have someone starting PRE-K!!!
