As with the girls, the first two years of Gavin's life have been a roller coaster. We brought home another healthy sweet baby from the hospital, then we went through what seemed like years of sleepless nights, did what seemed like thousands of loads of spit up covered laundry, changed "millions" of diapers and then "poof" we have a two year old. Mother's out there know what I'm talking about...the beginning seems to DRAG on and on, but then they're two and you're asking "how did we get here so fast?". Gavin turned two last Friday and he is everything you would expect from a two year old...including the fits, unfortunately!
Last Saturday all our families gathered together out at G-ma and G-pa's F's house for some birthday swimming and pizza. Gavin does a pretty good job of saying "cheese" for the camera, as pictured above, but below is a more typical Gavin face. I think he understood it was his birthday, he will even hold up two fingers now when you ask him how old he is, but he was in a total trans while everyone sang happy birthday.
Thank you again to Sam's Club for having a cake already made and decorated for this "non-baking" Mom. I use to be so good about birthdays with invitations, decorations, food, cakes etc. Now I'm lucky if I send a text out before the actual party about the wheres and whens. There are no decorations, and I completely rely on grocery stores to have some sort of dessert ready to go. It's gotten pretty bad, but at least I'm still getting everyone together for the birthdays and the kids don't seem to notice that the plates and cups don't match and there aren't any streamers. Point is he turned two and he enjoyed every one's company!
Now that he is two we opted for the use of a fork rather than fingers for the cake and he started out OK...
He got the concept, but he's use to stuff already being cut into bite size pieces.
Didn't matter though, cake is cake and it's yummy no matter how you eat it.
This is literally the ONLY decent picture I got of him opening his gifts. With the four other children surrounding him, every picture was of the back of some one's head, wrapping paper, hands, boxes and so on. This one is his new garbage truck...it was a big hit with Gavin AND Ashton!!
Once everything was opened I could finally get a picture of just Gavin, but he was too pre-occupied to look at me. :(
The night before the swim party, on Gavin's actual birthday, we had a mini-party with just us and G-ma C who had come in town. We celebrated with ice cream out on the deck.
G-ma C let Gavin open his gifts so we wouldn't have to figure out a way to get the new hoop back and forth. Gavin likes to shoot baskets, but is a bit short to do it on his own. Ella tried to show him how to make a "jump-shot". That was unsuccessful.
She was determined to help though...next she tried to lift Gavin up to the hoop. This too was unsuccessful.
Finally, we got out Gavin's new stool from G-pa C to give him the extra boost he needed. The rest of the night was spent shooting baskets. Or "goals into the tennis net" as Ava called them. :) I guess we need to play and watch more sports around here?
We are so blessed to have three healthy kids. Gavin had his two year check up this week and he is in great health. He weighed in at 24 lbs. (7%), his height is 33.2in (19%) and his head is still up there in the 95th percentile. Right now he is a bit on the small side but it's not like he come from two giants and he's still on the charts so there are no concerns. Gavin loves to run, wrestle, be LOUD, get dirty and all of those wonderful things that go along with having a boy. He also loves to cuddle and listen to books. Our biggest challenge with Gavin right now is his lack of speech. There are only a small handful of words that Gavin can say and people can actually understand. He mostly has different hums, yes hums, for different things and a couple of signs he uses. I didn't have to deal with this with the girls since I could have a conversation with them by the age of two, so I am a bit frustrated, as is Gavin. I believe most of the fits he throws these days are due to his frustration with not being understood. This was not a big concern for the doctor since Gavin is the third born and has two older sisters ("moms"). However, for the purpose of putting my mind at ease he will see an audiologist and speech therapist to be evaluated and make sure nothing more serious than being stubborn is going on, fingers crossed. I'll keep you updated on his progress. Thank you to everyone who came and helped us celebrate Gavin's second birthday, he couldn't tell me so, but I think he had a good time! :)
